Acer AS5742Z-4685 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

I’ve honestly been adverse to picking up or even purchasing an Acer computer. See, I had a friend who had an Acer back in the days when Quake 1 was the rage and he bought an Acer – said it was the best brand around – and it had so many issues and problems that I said I would not buy one unless pigs started to fly. Since that experience, I’ve always attuned my ears to the negative reviews directed toward Acer computer.

Needless to say, I’ve been converted. The Acer AS5742Z-4685 has been one of the main reasons why I now rank Acer as a quality notebook manufacturer. This particular notebook is a nice piece of engineering. It has a nice screen (15.6 inches with a 1366 X 768 resolution), a decent hard drive with 320 Gb of space (SATA hard disk), a 2.0GHz Intel dual-core processor, 4 Gigabytes of DDR 3 RAM and an 8X SuperMulti Drive.

Even though the Acer AS5742Z-4685 is on the larger scale of things with the 15.6 inch screen, it doesn’t look huge. This is probably due to the rounded edges and chic black finish that the notebook has. In addition to the look, the notebook weighs in at about 5.7 lbs.

Acer did also bundle in some nice new pieces of hardware like the multi-touch track pad that takes advantage of Windows 7 new capabilities. While the multi-gesture/ multi-touch track pad isn’t as good as Apple’s, it is definitely an upgrade of the standard touchpad.

There’s also an option for HDMI out and the on-board Intel Graphics Card does a decent job decoding video and rendering games. While not as quick as a dedicated graphics card, to most users, there will be no noticeable difference.

A 1.3 megapixel, HD Webcam comes integrated with the Acer AS5742Z-4685 and allows you to broadcast or record home-made videos without much effort. The webcam can record or chat with a maximum resolution of 1280 X 1024. Now you are able to capture memories in at least 720p which is about half-HD.

In terms of power consumption and battery life, the Acer AS5742Z-4685 is decent. If you work continuously without a DC power source, you should be able to eke out 3.5 hours from the Acer AS5742Z-4685. The overall nature of the notebook is one towards conserving energy rather than wasting it.

At the end of the day, the price point of the Acer AS5742Z-4685 really makes this computer very attractive. Sure it could have better accessories or hardware pieces, but then you and I would have had to pay premium prices. And for many of us in this day and age, spending extra money is probably not our first inclination.

Laptop Reviews – ASUS G73JW-A1 Gaming Laptop

Wow! When I first saw the specs on the Asus G73JW-A1, I was blown away. A 17 inch monitor capable of full HD resolution (1920 X 1080); TWO 500GB, 7200 RPM Seagate hard drives; a Blue-Ray reader; a built-for-gamers NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics card with 1.5GB DDR5 memory; the list just gets better. The specs read like a gamers’ rig but all these quality components are housed inside a notebook body!

Asus has long been known in the computer hardware arena for producing quality products. My first desktop had a sweet Asus Mobo that at the time was the envy of many (now it won’t even fetch 1 dollar). Asus notebooks also have the distinction of packing in as much top-of-the-line hardware as possible for a very decent price, and this new gaming laptop model is no exception. The motto of Asus’s success story seems to be ‘Minimum Price, Maximum Power!’.

The Asus G73JW-A1 is just under 9 lbs. in weight. While hefty, it does have a 17 inch screen and Core-i7 chip on board that comes with BOTH an overclocking function AND a TURBO option! However, the main reason for the size and weight is due to the cooling system that Asus designed for this notebook. Obviously aimed at gamers or those who are serious about the multimedia and entertainment capabilities of their machine, Asus’ cooling system allows you to keep your machine on and not experience any change in performance due to heat. There’s also the 8-cell Lithium Ion battery pack that gives you almost 3 hours of up-time. That’s a fantastic feat for a notebook for this size and specs!

Some might gripe that the Asus G73JW-A1 doesn’t have a multi-touch touch-pad that seems to come standard with many new notebooks there days. However, if you are a serious gamer, I bet you have a very expensive mouse like the Razer Naga MMOG Laser Gaming Mouse and will not lose sleep over multi-touch functionality on your touch-pad.

While it is not the fastest notebook/laptop out there, the Asus G73JW-A1 is definitely a serious contender. I would have to say that Asus got it right when it decided to put this together. Now I just need to scrape enough money together and convince my wife that this is THE computer our family needs; if we buy this, I we will be in Gamers’ Heaven.

Benefits of Having a Netbook

The world that we are living in today is simply fascinating. There is so much advancement when it comes to technology. For example, a few years back, when you think about computers, what would get into your mind are the bulky monitors and CPUs or more commonly known as the desktop computer. You even have to dedicate a space in your home just to be able to set up a desktop computer and when you’re using it, you need to stay just in that one spot. Then, eventually, the laptop computer came along and it made things much more convenient and portable. Today, you know what else is even more portable than laptop? It’s the netbook.

You probably have seen one of those smaller computers which almost look like just another kids’ gaming device. Actually, netbook is capable of doing almost all the daily common things that you need to do with your computer. You can connect to the internet, do web surfing, open documents, view pictures, download movies, music and other usual activities.

The main reason why netbook has won the hearts of many people is because it is very portable. The size of a netbook is usually just about ten inches but its capabilities are impressive. For people who are on the go, this is great because it is much easier to bring along. It is small enough to just put inside the bag and convenient enough to use.

Since people have also developed a dependency on the internet, the netbook is also great for internet surfing, online shopping, online banking and all other activities that you need to do online. Most of the netbooks that are out in the market these days are capable of connecting to a wi-fi internet connection or to a DSL connection.

Since communication via the internet and social networking is also a big thing these days, most netbooks also have a built in web camera, microphone and speakers so that there will be no more hindrances in doing voice and video chatting.

Honest HP Mini 210 Review

HP mini 210 is another master piece from HP which has introduced the HD screen in mini notebook. HP mini 210 has 10.1 inches screen, a processor of 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB of memory and increased storage capacity of 160GB and 250GB. Surfing internet, playing music, working on a document and some normal task goes very smooth on HP mini 210. This notebook can be good for simple user or for the students. Browsing and working on different windows at the same time is more similar to working on desktop or any other full size laptop.

HP mini 210 is equipped with many good features, if you open the lid and look into it – the island style keyboard will draw your attention towards it. However the keys are not very large and they don’t have the curve in them to make it a more finger comfort keyboard. But the good thing is HP has always made a proper use of the space, all main keys are well sized which makes this keyboard a wonderful and easy to use. Your fingers will never drench into pain if you keep on working for a long time.

The mouse pad in HP mini 210 is friendlier than the 110; however there is still one problem with this mouse pad as it is occupying more space than required. Ridiculously it looks bigger and feels like it has got half of the notebook. But the good thing is HP has finally got rid of those left and right buttons. This is truly a relief.

This notebook has a 3-cell battery and if you are a movie lover and want to watch HD movie. This mini 210 will let you play two HD movies without having any problem and if you turn on repeat function from the player and play same movie again and again then it will last in 4 hours and 45 min. This is with high definition video and if you check it with a standard definition, it goes around 5 hours and 15 min which is more than any other mini laptop.

HP mini 210 has got good display screen, however it seems a bit hard while sharing the screen with someone as you have to be on an angle to view the best result. However watching alone – it makes you feel more comfortable. HP mini 210 has on its left side VGA, HHD indicator and headphone port and on the right side 2 USB ports, Ethernet port, Multi card reader and power switch. Its price starts from $329.99 which is quite affordable for students and staying home moms.

Netbook Reviews – Acer Aspire One AOD255-2509

The Acer Aspire One AOD255-2509 is one of those 2010 laptops that stood out for all the right reasons. This amazingly thin and incredibly versatile unit was one of my favorites from the past year because it offered everything imaginable in one package. With a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display and a gaggle of special features sure to make your friends jealous, this is one attention-grabbing gadget you’ll want to show off.

Specs, Baby, Specs

So if you thought other computers had it good, the Acer One is here to change hearts and minds. Starting with a sturdy 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor and including a 160GB hard drive clocked at 5,400rpm, the Acer Aspire One AOD255-2509 is something for the ages.

1GB of DDR2 RAM and integrated Intel graphics make your dreams come true in real color and real style, while the amazingly clear Crystal Eye web-cam, a 1.3 megapixel beauty, will transmit images of your gorgeous face to the world at large.

C’mon, C’mon, C’mon Now Touch Me, Baby

One of the neatest things the Acer One includes is a multi-gesture touch-pad. Now I know: multi-gesture touch-pads are common and almost every market laptop worth its salt features one. But the Acer Aspire One AOD255-2509 features something a little different with its touch-pad in that it can actually be disabled with one button. It’s a highly versatile touch-pad, too, allowing for pinching and squeezing and all sorts of hand motions. We’re still talking about the touch-pad, right?

More Fun

This compact beauty includes Windows 7 Starter for good measure, offering a complement of programs and applications that you’ll find to be a lot of fun. The 64-bit version includes things like Jump Lists and better taskbar controls, enabling for improved navigation around your new Acer One.

Windows Anytime Upgrade is also included, allowing the opportunity to move on up in the world to other versions of the popular and incredibly Windows 7 O/S.

Atom Dual Core Laptop Review: ASUS Eee PC VX6 Lamborghini

When you hear of a laptop name that has a name of a popular car brand attached to it then you know that is has to be special. The Atom dual core laptop Eee PC VX6 Lamborghini from Asus is one such special laptop. This limited edition laptop has an Atom D525 processor running at 1.8 GHz and its exterior design borrows heavily from the features of the Lamborghini sports car.

This 12 inch atom dual core laptop costs $699 and has features that will leave its competition in the dust. The first thing you will notice about this laptop is its exquisite design. It is solidly built and doesn’t provide any creaks when held tightly. Its lid bears the logo of Lamborghini attesting to its build design and quality. The keys on the keypad are evenly spaced and are comparable to that of the Sony Vaio class of laptops.
The 12 inch screen it possesses is capable of providing a 1366×768 resolution which means you will get more detail from your videos, photos or even applications. The USB technology used is already 3.0, which is ten times faster in transferring data compared to USB 2.0. This model comes with three USB 3.0 ports and is probably one of the first laptop of its kind to have this.

Aside from the powerful processor this model uses the Nvidia Ion 2 to provide you with excellent graphics quality. Playing HD videos using this unit will be a pleasure to watch. In terms of performance the Asus Eee PC VX6 Lamborghini can easily beat out any laptop models of its class. In terms of processing power it has the upper hand due to its 1.8 GHz dual core processor used. Battery life is also excellent since if you need more operation time you can switch off the discrete Nvidia Ion 2 graphics card and use the internal graphics which uses less power. This model can provide you with up to 5 hours of usage time before needing to be charged.

Why You Should Change Your Desktop PC With A Laptop Computer!

Why would you replace your desktop with a laptop and what are the best desktop replacement laptops, you ask? First of all, let’s consider the reasons:

Portability

For starters, more and more people prefer the portability a laptop provides. You cannot carry a desktop around that easily so the best desktop replacements are indeed laptops regarding the portability issue.

Power Saving

A desktop computer’s power supply can suck up to 1000W of power which can inflate your monthly electric bill quite a bit. Why go for these power guzzlers when you can get a one of the best desktop replacements out there, a laptop? A laptop can run on batteries so, when you’re not charging it, it can run pretty much only on its battery.

Newer versions come with newer battery technologies which can last up to 12 hours on a single charge. Laptops are indeed the best desktops replacement when it comes to saving power and decreasing your monthly bill.

Space Requirements

If occupied space is your main concern, then the best desktop replacement is indeed a laptop due to its limited space requirements. With a desktop you can get to occupy a whole desk, considering all the peripherals, monitor and the computer case. Also, many users are multimedia junkies so the whole contraption can get even larger with additional surround sound systems and many USB gadgets that have already hit the market. Why not keep it simple and replace the huge space occupied with a laptop and, if it suits your needs, get a small mouse for your laptop. That’s pretty much all you need and you get to save up on a lot of space in the process.

Internet Connectivity

Wired or wireless internet access? That’s the question when considering a replacement for your desktop PC. With wired internet access, you can only connect your desktop to the internet using a wired (fiber, cable, etc) connection and you can’t take it anywhere with you. With a laptop to replace your desktop, you have the portability issue solved, along with gaining access to wireless internet access present pretty much all over the place in our current times.

Basic Information on Sony VAIO VPCJ1190X Review

Sony VAIO is a well-recognized brand, and its contribution is revolutionary to meet the next generations computing requirements. The effort starts in the notebooks from the lid to the battery, everything comes in between is the nothing but just the excellence. This is why the Sony VAIO has inspiring fame in the market. Now Sony VAIO is stepping in to the desktop PC which is a huge step in computing. This Sony VAIO VPCJ1190X comes with the 21.5″ Full HD Touch screen VAIO Premium which is indeed another world-shattering achievement.

This desktop PC comes with the turbo boost technology, now when we talk about the turbo boost it automatically increases the system speed when PC needs some performance. Talking about desktop computers, it should always light the candles for customizations. Sony as well, came up with huge range of the option to customize your PC accordingly. It comes with the Intel core i3 processor; i5 core second generation and i7 quad core processor that includes the turbo boost technology with starting speed from 2.53GHZ and goes up to 3.46GHZ with turbo boost. The main memory is from 2GB to 8GB and storage is amazingly starts from 500GB SATA hard drive with 7200 rpm to 1 TB SATA hard Drive with 7200rpm. It comes with Intel HD media accelerator. You can have a NVIDIA GeForce 310m card with 512 MB memory.

Having VAIO Premium 21.5 inches with full high definition touch screen is with all these spec makers. It is ideal for the people who work on cutting edge application. Moreover this desktop computer is also suitable for the gaming but it is more ideal for a person who works on video editing, streaming and photo editing. This machine is equipped with all the processors that are well known for the multitasking on high productivity applications, such as application related to the studios, video editing applications.

The starting price with the base configurations is $899.99 which allows you 2.53GHZ i3 Intel core processor with 2GB memory, with storage of 500GB and Intel HD media accelerator card. Now paying $899.99 for VAIO Premium 21.5″ screen with all these spec still not a very good deal. Sony is allowing you up gradation for low cost but still it is expensive. Sony VAIO VPCJ1190X is disappointing for the Sony VAIO fans. It is Sony, but you can get much better specs with the same price and if you spend few more and you will be getting much efficient machine than this.

HP Pavilion dm4-1277sb 14-Inch Notebook PC Review

This is an extremely nice laptop. I needed a desktop replacement since my desktop was completely destroyed due to a electrical fire, this is why I chose a i5 over a i3 CPU and 14inch over 13.3 inch. I immediately installed an Intel SSD 80GB in this HP which I recovered from my desktop, so boot-ups and loading apps is fast!. I’m a big fan of SSDs and highly recommend for speed and low power. Over all I’m extremely pleased with this notebook, and would highly recommend if you need something close to desktop power. I purchased this at a local store because I had a $400 in-store credit. Buying on Amazon is a no-brainer which saves approx $100-150.

Pros
-Doesn’t look cheap, has extremely nice aluminum/silver surface to give professional look. Easily looks like $800-1000+ laptop, which was important for me.
-i5 with Dual-Core and HT = 4 CPUS showing in task manager, WEI for CPU 6.9! My desktop which had an Intel Q9650 pure Quad Core was 7.3 WEI. Not bad for a notebook!
-Good balance of battery vs power, seems to be able to get 5-6 hours with normal use. I’m using a SSD which does improve battery life.
-Win 7 Pro – Will be using this as primary comp for awhile so needed Pro
-Intel 80GB SSD scores hard-disk WEI 7.5! on this HP, on previous desktop same SSD was 7.2.
-14 inch screen is good size, did not want anything bigger which takes away professional/sleek look. 13.3 screen size would also be perfect, especially if siding on the mobility side.
-Video/HDMI is perfect for my needs, not a gamer but HD videos plays perfect via HDMI on HDTV.
-eSata was a must for fast data transfers
-Great keyboard! Good size and natural feel. I’m not using track-pad much, I rather use a mouse.
-Finger print login works easy and is nice:)
-Card reader for camera works well, originally didn’t see it but eventually found in front when I really needed
-Extra super quiet! Again, I’m sure this is in part due to SSD I’m using, but fans are not noisy.

Cons
-No OS or Recovery CDs which made it difficult to migrate to SSD, eventually had to use Intel’s SSD migration tools. I will not drop the score for this since this was partially my fault and I knew up front this wouldn’t have recovery CDs.
-Lots of Bloatware, which I needed to remove since I was moving to a 80GB SSD. HP does have an option in BIOS F11 to Recover just OS and Drivers. I went thru this process and Win7 installed clean with the exception of a few HP tools which I kept. I just wish this was the default config. Clean install only was approx 29GB out of the 80GB SSD, leaving me with more than enough space for all future apps.
-Wish it had 1 more USB port – Has 3 USB ports and 1 is shared with eSATA which I’m using frequently. Oh well, I see a $10-20 USB Hub in my future.

ASUS G73JW-ROG Limited Edition 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop Review

First, Amazon Prime is awesome. I received my computer in 1 day (28hrs) for $4 shipping (15lbs). Wow!
I researched a few weeks before deciding on the XA1. I liked the A1 also but for $300+ less I couldn’t resist the XA1.

What I like:

1. The case is flat black and will never show fingerprints (finally a finish for gamer’s (and diets))!
2. The illuminated keyboard is super handy.
3. This computer is FAST, COOL and QUIET. Excellent cooling out the back as described in specs.
4. Low profile decorative lighting.
5. The DVD drive is on the left side of the computer so doesn’t interfere with my mouse (right handed).

What I don’t like:

1. The DVD drive has no drive status or drive in-use light. You have to rely on the software to tell you it is in-use.
2. Since the cooling out the back is so agressive, all the ports (USB/VGA/HDMI etc.)are on the sides. This crowds the sides if you want to use a video cable.
3. I think the hard drive status light is hard to see as it is right under the touch pad.
4. At certain angles, one can see the LEDs under the keys on the keyboard and and they are bright and distracting.

Differences between the A1 and XA1:

1. Yes, it’s verified, the XA1 does NOT come with a back pack or ASUS gaming mouse as does the A1.
2. The XA1 has 8GB of 1033Mhz memory as reported by the CRUCIAL memory tester program (although the outside of the box states 1333mhz). The A1 has 8GB of 1333MHz memory.
3. No blue-ray player in the XA1. The A1 has one.
4. Did I mention that the XA1 is more than $300 cheaper?
5. Only 1 year warranty but it is still covered for accidental drops and spills for that whole year (ASUS Global Warranty). The A1 has a 2 year warranty.
6. Oh, almost forgot, the hard drive installed is 750GB and is 7200rpm (verified). It is pre-partitioned to a 250GB OS partition and a 500GB data partition. The A1 has two 500GB 7200RPM drives.

My first impression is that I can’t believe I got this much computing power for < $1500. The computer has a quality feel and fit and seems to be thoughfully designed. I have only had mine for a few days but would highly recommend this to others. I’ll post more info as I gain more experience.

If you get the model with an 8-cell battery, the laptop can be use for up to 10 hours on one charge, which is impressive by 14-inch laptop standards. This model comes with SRS Premium Sound Altec Lansing speakers.

As mentioned, this laptop is one slim machine, where it measures just around 0.6 inches at its thinnest point. This laptop measures at around 12.99 x 9.44 x 0.7 inches in its overall dimension. The model with the 8-cell battery weighs in at around 4.6 pounds. Despite its size, this laptop feels very sturdy thanks to its structure that is constructed from aluminum alloy. It also has a brushed aluminum lid and a fingerprint resistant palm rest on the inside. This model is easily one of the sexiest looking laptop in the market. All in all, the 14-inch Asus UL80JT is the perfect laptop for more demanding laptop user, especially if you have the extra cash to spare. At the moment, the Asus UL80JT is retailing at just around $899 per unit.

HP G62-340us 15.6-Inch Laptop PC Review

This HP G62-340us laptop does exactly what it should do. To compare, during the 2010 xmas season this computer was selling in the 350-400 range, something to keep in mind. This HP is an absolute-budget model, and the dual core AMD CPU, 3GB RAM, and large HDD makes it a fabulous value. I’m going to only highlight the negatives, because overall this laptop is great for day to day use:

Large viewing screen. Bold bright colors. Easy to learn functions. My grandchildren ages 9-13yrs found it easy to access games and social links.
They have been wanting a computer for a long time> It was a surprise Christmas gift.

-Yes, the mouse button is terrible. You can get by it by setting the “mouse” up to accept a tap as a click. You can also use a bluetooth or wired mouse. Also, sometimes the mouse pad doesn’t catch your finger movements, this is rare but it happens. The multitouch is a nice feature.

-The biggest negative is the screen. There’s no way you can expect a high quality display at this price point. Next to my macbook, this display is lacking (the apple also cost 4 times as much). The range and depth of colors isn’t anywhere near what a higher quality display produces. Also, the viewing angle is narrow – i.e. if you and a friend are looking at the screen, both of you will see a fade at the outer parts of the screen.

I’m into digital photography. If you are too, I would definitely spend an extra $200+ on a machine with a better display. Don’t get me wrong – this display is fine for Internet, watching DVDs, TV, and the occasional game, but you get what you pay for.

Acer AS5742Z-4685 Laptop Review

I agree with Trellium’s excellent review. I use the Acer AS5742Z-4685 laptop for business: developing marketing plans and websites. The 4 gigabytes of RAM enable programs to quickly execute without any delay. The graphics are adequate for demo’s to clients and developing applications. (I do not play any games on the computer. Therefore have no perspective on its performance in that field.)

There was not too much software junk preinstalled. Although I did spend a few hours with Revo Uninstaller to remove everything but the basic stuff. I opted to work with Avast’s Antivirus software. It’s performance on the Acer is excellent – do not even realize it is operational. I also used MSCONFIG to turn off features, like the internal camera, that I do not use.

The unit is very light – easy to carry around. Good battery usage – about 3 to 4 hours.

Would highly recommend this computer to anyone interested in a quality laptop for multiple purposes.

I got this unit for $399 on sale. It’s got Intel’s latest great budget duo-core processor (P6100, without hyperthreading capability), not a stripped down single-core Celeron processor. The design is sleek and mesh-like surface finish resists finger print smudges and overall, it feels more expensive than it really is. You can burn restore disks from the recovery menu in case you need to reintall OS or a new HD. It came with 4G of RAM but I upgraded to 8G RAM ($105) and 320g 7200 RPM HD ($55). Now it runs blazing fast, for a budget laptop.
Pros: HDMI output to connect directly to LCD TV for fantastic picture and video viewing; 3 USB ports; runs cool and decent but not great battery life (about 3.5 hrs normal usage); built-in webcam; fantastic LED backlit LCD screen; solid keyboard; SD card reader.

Cons: onboard graphics processor not for gaming; lame sounding speaker (it only has one, not two), spotty customer and tech support (but not the worst); lots of Acer derived nannyware

Overall, one of two recommnded budget laptops under $500, other being ASUS K52 variant (Best Buy).
I would buy again.
