How to Measure Your Foot Properly

February 6th, 2010

Knowing how to measure both feet properly is one of the ‘real biggies’ of good shoe fit. It’s also seems to be more art than science sometimes!

You may have read about variations on drawing an outline of your foot on a piece of paper and measuring the dimensions of the drawing. This is one way to measure your foot in a pinch and can get you close. It does have limitations though.

A Better Way

In a nutshell, find a knowledgeable sales person in a reputable shoe store to measure your foot. She should be properly trained in the use of something called the Brannock Device. (Yup. That funny looking silver and black thing).

This device was invented by Charles Brannock in Syracuse, NY over 80 years ago. He was passionate about finding the best way to measure your foot. It’s still being manufactured and used around the world today. Needless to say, it’s the de facto standard way to measure your foot because it works very well.

You need to be standing with your weight equally on both feet and with your feet side by side – not one in front of the other. You want to make sure that your foot has elongated and spread as far as it does when you walk. Yup, they do change shape – and size – between when you’re not standing on them and standing on them!

Wear the socks you plan on wearing with the shoe you’re purchasing (or no socks if you plan to wear the shoes that way). Make sure your sock fits properly with no toe or heel slack. You’re measuring your foot here, not extra sock material!

When you measure your foot, you will need three separate measurements…

Heel To Toe Length

Place your heel snugly in the correct cup of the device. There’s a different one for each foot. Note the size marking closest to the longest toe. Don’t add another half or full size to this number. Toe room allowance is already built into the shoe itself – usually 3/8″-1/2″ more.

Heel To Ball (Arch) Length

This is the most important shoe fit criteria. It matches shoe flex with foot flex. It also fits the widest part of the foot with the widest part of the shoe.

With your heel snugly in the cup, position the concave slider on the inside of your foot so that the ball joint (bump behind your big toe) fits snugly into it. Note the size on that scale. This shoe size may or may not be the same as the shoe size indicated by your heel to toe length. Confused? Read on!

Differences in your heel-to-toe length and heel-to-arch length size are basically an indicator of whether you have longer or shorter toes than the average. If there is less than a 1/2 size difference between the two measures, then you should try the heel-to-ball shoe size on first.

In cases where there is more than one size difference between these two measures, then split the difference. Start with that shoe size. We are trying also here to match the widest part of your foot with the widest part of the shoe which just happens to be where the shoe flexes! So let’s finish with…

Foot Width

…the final measurement! So with the heel snug in the cup and the ball snug in the concave slider we move the width slider against the outside of the foot. Here you have to find the shoe size from the previous step on the scale to find the correct width.

In cases where there is a big difference between your heel-to-toe and heel-to-arch measurement, you should compromise between the two measurements and see if a shoe with a longer vamp (ball to toe) length is available.

There you have it. These important tips will help you pick your shoe size for the best comfortable and supporting fit. Make sure to measure your feet often as they do tend to change their shape and size.

I hope you found this helpful.

New Zhu Zhu Babies Released

January 30th, 2010

2010 has seen the release of the new zhu zhu babies. They are without doubt already selling well and this will only continue.

These zhu babies are a little different to the traditional hamsters that were a massive hit in 2009. They are not interactive in the same way. Rather they are more to be played with as they are rather than to run around the house being crazy or on slides etc like their parents. These are a little more subtle and are designed more to be played with by the children using their imaginations.

What you will find is that the range is increasing all the time and it is no surprise that they really are a big hit. They seem to be being released on an almost weekly basis and it seems like there will be quite a large number of them available as the year progresses. They all have their own names and personalities and they each come with a small set of accessories to accompany them.

Some have a little mirror and brush while others seem to have little rubber ducks to play with. They can also be played with with their parents and it seems that the kids really do like to try to work out who the parents of each one are. We can assume that they will be massive sellers at the end of the year and there is little doubt that the little critters are going to be extremely popular so rest assured that hey are gong to be a great Christmas toy, let’s just hope that the prices do not rise too much like they did for the parents at the end of 2009, as the prices went very high indeed.

It may even be worth getting a collection of them early in the year while prices are still extremely low and they are readily available.

How to Be a Smart Dollar Store Shopper

January 30th, 2010

Not every purchase we make is entirely satisfying. Recently, I had to return a winter jacket to Sears after only two months of wear because a couple of the seams had started to fray. But dollar stores seem particularly susceptible to criticism that “everything” they sell is junk. Personally, I can’t agree with that, but I do admit that there are some things that dollar stores shouldn’t try to sell for a buck or two.

An informed shopper is a smart shopper. So, if something in the dollar store looks too good to be true, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. How can you tell? Here are some tips that will help you to decide.

1. Touch it. If something has a nice weight to it, it will probably be a good buy. For instance, I don’t buy hand towels if, when I hold them up to the light, I can see through the weave. But I’ve always found dollar store tea towels to be of excellent quality. If I heft a pair of metal pliers and they look and feel sturdy, the store has made a sale. And, I might add, I’ve been very happy with my small-tool purchases.

Glass vases and candle holders are usually always good buys. You can easily tell if the glass is flawed or has ripples in it.

2. Test it. Always check lids. Do they come off and go on easily? If they don’t, leave that item on the shelf. My local dollar store recently started selling small, colorful wastebaskets with swinging flaps in the lids. The lids come off easily, but just try to get them fitted back on. They slide all over and refuse to snap back into place. Garbage day should not include a frustrating puzzle. On the other hand, the lids on the glass and ceramic canisters I’ve bought in recent months have performed beautifully.

3. Try the zipper. The zipper on a tapestry cushion cover I brought home last year would only open half way, making it impossible to use. That was, I suspect, just a fluke because when I tested the zipper on a similar cushion cover recently, it worked perfectly.

4. Check expiration dates on food. My personal experience with dollar store food has been favorable but I have heard complaints of infestations in cereals and rice or stale cookies. The simple fix is to check expiry dates on packages.

5. Be aware of varying clothing sizes. Most dollar stores sell some clothing. I like the socks but you need to be aware that sizes can vary from one pair to another. I’ve bought socks that were labeled size 9 women’s that were far too big for me. The sport socks, on the other hand, are a good fit and long-wearing, although foot length does vary slightly between pairs.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that things such as camisoles and other undergarments are often a size smaller than what’s on the label. So a medium would actually be a small and a small, extra small.

6. Learn from experience. A few months ago, I bought a flannel backed vinyl tablecloth for two bucks at the dollar store. It seemed perfectly sturdy. Turns out it should have stayed out of the kitchen ’cause It couldn’t take the heat. Within a few weeks the color began to fade where hot plates had been placed and then bits of tablecloth started to flake off. It’s unlikely that a new $2 purchase would perform any differently. Same for the plastic-handled can opener I paid a buck for. It fell apart the instant pressure was applied to the lid of a can.

Sometimes, these things are only flukes but, at dollar store prices, you can’t be sure.

In my experience, “You only get what you pay for,” isn’t always true. Sometimes you can get a darn good deal for a buck or two. You just have to know what to look for and what to avoid. Often, the only way to judge something is to try it.

How to Select Running Shoes Or Tennis Shoes For Your Foot Type

January 30th, 2010

There are many different types of shoes and sometimes it can be difficult to select the best pair for you. There are three basic types of feet and you can find the best running shoe, tennis shoe, or skate shoe for your foot type. You can find the best type of brand name, high-quality shoe which will benefit your foot type.

If you have flat feet your foot usually will strike on the outside of the heel and then rolled inward, this is called overpronating. Overpronating can cause several types of overuse injuries. Persons with flat feet tend to overpronate and may experience a variety of injuries caused by overuse. Sportsmen with flat feet tend to have very flexible feet and usually find that a tennis shoe, running shoe, or skate shoe which offers motion control and a rigid sole is best for their feet. Motion control shoes are generally built on a wide stable shoot base and use stiff support pieces that are designed to slow down the extreme inward rolling of the foot and ankle. Nike footwear offers may types and examples of this shoe type.

If you have a high arched foot you need to wear a cushioned running shoe, tennis shoe, or skate shoe. The high arched foot tends to be rigid and tends to be supinated. A supinated foot tends to roll inward when moving with speed. This type of foot is usually not able to absorb shock very well and cushioned footwear with soft midsoles will help to add stability and absorb shock. Nike Air Pegasus and Nike Shox are excellent examples of this type of cushioned shoe.

The normal foot has a normal sized arch and little to no motion control problems. A normal foot will land on the outside of the heel and roll inward which will slightly absorb shock. The normal foot works best in a standard shoe offering good cushioning, durability and support. All name brand shoes will provide your foot with the quality and care that it needs to maintain its perfect health. Nike Air offers many varieties that will excel for you.

It is essential that you choose the correct pair of footwear for your foot type because it will significantly decrease any chance of injury. If you are unsure of your foot type take a look at an old pair of your shoes and take notice of the pattern in which they were worn out. You will be able to tell if most of your impact was felt mostly on the outside of the shoe, on the heel, or on the inward part of the shoe. This information will help you to choose the best running, tennis, or skate shoe for your foot. Your feet are important to your overall health and fitness and it is essential that you purchase a high quality, brand name shoe to ensure that your foot is cared for in the best possible way.

Refilling Your Pet Hair Roller Brush

January 30th, 2010

You may remember in a previous article I mentioned why the handle of a Lint Roller is so important… owning a roller with a removable handle provides the ability to use refills to keep future costs down, but this is not much use if the refills themselves aren’t up to scratch. So equally important is the quality of the refill itself.

You may think all refills are the same, but in fact the peeling of the adhesive sheets varies and it does make a big difference when you want to quickly peel away the sheet for a fresh layer. Good quality refills mean you can easily peel the sheet down to the next layer.

Simply put, a lint roller refills is a one-sided adhesive paper roll available with a spindle and handle. To use, all you have to do is to roll it on the areas from where you need to remove lint, and the adhesive paper will attract all the pieces, thus leaving your shirt, or any other piece of clothing, spotless.

Once the paper/roll has completed its work and needs to be changed, you can replace with another roll available as a separate piece in the same spindle. Animal owners are particularly familiar with this problem, and a lint roller makes for the perfect blessing in case you have a habit of hugging your pets goodbye, or have enthusiastic pets who always have a habit of staying close to you and hopping on to your lap whenever they get the opportunity.

Further, lint rollers can also be a great way to remove other small attachments like dandruff flakes, etc. from your clothes.

Our Pet Roller Refills are of a very high quality, manufactured to our specification. Many refills have about 4 metres of paper, but ours are long, long lasting with 7.5 metres – that’s about 25 ft!! of very adhesive paper. You can save up to 50% when you take advantage of our multipack discounts too!
